This post is sponsored by Enjoy Life Foods and you can find the recipe, posted first here.
These homemade donuts are the real deal! I love the shape of donuts, it’s moist chocolate cake-like texture, the creamy dark and white chocolate glaze that covers both sides and I especially love the chewy brownie crumbles with bright strawberry bits sprinkled on top. Breakfast, snack, dessert -heck, dinner anyone?- there’s never a wrong time to indulge in this delicious treat!
Allergy-friendly Chocolate
As a chocolate lover, any dessert that uses chocolate in different ways is guaranteed to cure my chocolate cravings. There are multiple kinds of chocolate in this chocolate donut recipe: cocoa powder for the batter, and Enjoy Life Foods chocolate morsels for the glaze, crushed Enjoy Life Foods brownie bites and their white baking mini chips as a second melted glaze.
Combined, these chocolate glazed donuts have a light yet moist crumb and a rich, smooth double chocolate glazed top. Pair with a glass of dairy-free milk, these donuts can be a sweet breakfast treat or a nice afternoon snack. Kids love them, adults love them and I love that they are a wonderful, healthier alternative for all our donut cravings.
How To Make Chocolate Donuts
To start, you will need a donut pan like this one. Be sure to lightly coat the pan with non-stick spray or a little oil to prevent the batter from sticking to the pan.
These chocolate brownie donuts are made from a thick chocolate cake-like batter. You begin by whisking the dry ingredients together in one bowl then the wet ingredients in another bowl. Then, like most cake recipes, you will mix the two together until combined.
The batter is thick, so I find it easiest to fill a piping bag or ziploc bag with the batter to pipe it into the pans. You can easily do this by cutting a corner off the bottom of the bag and gently squeezing to fill the pans ΒΎ of the way full. (The image below is for reference from another recipe but there is no need to use a piping tip – save yourself some clean up and just snip off the edge).
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean, being sure not to overcook then cool completely before glazing.
Double Chocolate Glaze
No donut is complete without a frosted top! These chocolate brownie donuts get 1 side covered in a rich chocolate glaze made with Enjoy Life Foods chocolate morsels and the other side covered in white mini chips. Pick which side of the donut you want to work with first then simply melt the ingredients, in intervals, using the microwave or double boiler and stir until smooth.
Dip the top of each donut into the chocolate glaze then sprinkle with crushed brownie bites and place on a cooling rack. (Alternatively, you can place crushed brownie bites in a shallow bowl and dip the chocolate topped donuts into it to coat). Repeat the process now for the bottom side by dipping in melted white chips and sprinkling with freeze-dried strawberries.
These donuts are best enjoyed the same day or can be kept for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. But trust me, our chocolate brownie donuts wonβt last longer than a day on your kitchen counter.
Tips for Making the Best Brownie Donuts
I know that homemade donuts might seem intimidating but trust me, theyβre as easy to make as a batch of cupcakes. Donuts are the kind of recipe that gets easier the more often you make them, and the batter is so quick to put together, you can whip it up in no time. Just in case you’re still a little worried, I have some pro tips below to make the most delicious triple brownie donuts:
- Instead of dipping, you can also drizzle the ganache on for a lighter topping.
- Donβt dip the baked chocolate doughnuts while they are warm. They need time to cool since these are a soft and tender cake donut. If you dip them while warm, they could more easily crumb while dipping.
- Crumble brownie bites into small pieces for a more even coating.
- I like to place the chocolate coated donuts in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes to allow chocolate to set before dipping the bottom side in the white chocolate.
- In a rush? Dip only one side in rich chocolate ganache, drizzle melted white chips on top then sprinkle with crushed brownie bites and freeze-dried strawberries.
