This has been an interesting week in the Dawson household. Starting with last week, Xander started having difficulty breathing and along with that, these strange itchy welts would pop up sporadically on different areas of his body. Of course we were out of town when this began. He had been on medicine for Croup so coughing had already been occurring, but this was so much more. We had labored breathing, wheezing and rapid heart beats.
I took him to see his doctor when we returned, but all he could do was medicate with steroids and a stronger daily allergy medicine. This only helps the symptoms but doesn’t explain the reason why or stop it from happening again. We were given a few options for what happened but because there are several things going on at the same time, that makes it difficult to pin point the trigger. Could it be the response to his antibiotic (although it was a 10 day treatment and all this began at day 9)? Could he be reacting to outside allergens? Or could he be reacting to a food that he once was not allergic to?
The only thing I really have control of is what he eats, so this week we are Wheat Free. I’m not sure if wheat is the cause of any of this, I just know that this is something that was low on his allergy test but because he eats a lot of items that contain wheat, he may have actually developed a stronger allergy towards it. I have to say that Xander has been a trouper! He really wants certain things but knows that for right now, its only 7 days. Once we try putting it back into his diet, we will then see if those reactions start again.
I’ve grabbed books from the library, and made 3 trips to the Natural Store to buy specialty flours so that I can actually make him bread. Although there are Gluten Free breads, all the good tasting ones still contain eggs or dairy. And all the cardboard tasting ones,,,,well lets just say, I made can make that at home. So today I bake. I tried making bread, but as I already mentioned, its a little on the hard side. I then made another loaf of bread which thankfully turned out yummy. And now, in my oven are Gluten free thumb print cookies which smell good but we haven’d been able to taste them yet.
I have no idea how this is all going to work out but I have to be prepared. I’d like to have a grasp on how to make delicious treats not only Dairy and Egg & Nut Free, but also Wheat/Gluten Free, just in case we need that option. It doesn’t seem possible, so I’m ready to take on the challenge. A if it turns out that Xander can handle wheat, then I’ll have a few recipes to share with others who do face that challenge.0
